The Earth's circumference at the equator is 40,075 kilometers, or 24,901 miles. How many steps would it take to walk that distance? The math is satisfying to work out.
The average adult stride is roughly 0.76 meters, giving about 1,312 steps per kilometer.
40,075 km x 1,312 = about 52,578,000 steps.
Walking around the Earth would take roughly 52 to 53 million steps. The exact number varies slightly by stride length, but 52 million is a solid working figure.
At 10,000 steps per day, consistently: 52,578,000 divided by 10,000 = 5,257 days. That's just over 14 years.
Push to 15,000 steps per day and you'd get there in under 10 years. Drop to 5,000 and you're looking at closer to 29 years.
No one is literally walking around the Earth, but the comparison puts daily step counts in a new light. Your 8,000 steps today are another 8 kilometers toward a theoretical journey.
Walking across the United States coast to coast, roughly 4,700 km, would take about 6.2 million steps.
The length of the Great Wall of China (around 21,000 km) would take about 27.6 million steps.
The Pacific Crest Trail (about 4,285 km) takes roughly 5.6 million steps to complete.
Walking to the Moon from Earth (384,400 km) would require around 504 million steps, about 10 times around the Earth.
All theoretical, obviously. But these comparisons are useful reminders that distance and steps are the same thing, just framed differently.
You won't walk around the globe, but you can walk toward something every day. Steps & Beasts is an iPhone step tracker that makes each day's walk feel like progress toward something tangible.
Set a daily step goal, hatch a new Beast from 170+ collectibles every day you hit it, and watch your streak build over weeks and months. No account required, no ads, syncs with Apple Health.
The 52-million-step number is a fun thought experiment. The real motivation comes from showing up today and hitting today's goal.
