Hi, I'm Malte, indie app developer and founder of Steps & Beasts. Something simple has had a real impact on my daily mood: walking during the golden hour.
That soft window of light just after sunrise or just before sunset does something to a walk. It turns ordinary movement into something grounding, something worth leaving the house for.
For years I walked to get my steps in. Once I started timing walks around golden hour, it felt completely different. The light is warmer, the world feels slower, and you get more present. That's backed by research: sunlight around sunrise or sunset helps regulate your circadian rhythm, raises serotonin, and lowers cortisol. The timing isn't incidental. It's part of why the walk feels good.
I track my steps with Steps & Beasts, and now I plan at least one walk during golden hour each day.
I check the sunset time and block 20 minutes before it gets dark.
Phone on silent. I focus on the light, the sounds, and how my body feels.
Back in the app, I can see my progress toward my daily goal. What really stays with me is how much lighter I feel afterward.
These walks decompress my evenings after long coding sessions. New ideas for the app often show up on them.
Studies show that combining light movement with natural light exposure improves mood and lowers anxiety. It's not just the act of walking. It's where and when. The warm sky tones, the cool air, the rhythm of steps: it creates a mental reset that meditation apps spend a lot of effort trying to replicate. This one is just a walk outside at the right time. Check sunrise and sunset times and plan a short walk around them. Fifteen to twenty minutes is enough. Pick a quiet path or park. Focus on your surroundings rather than your phone. If you want to track your steps, Steps & Beasts adds a light reward loop that makes the habit easier to maintain.
When I built Steps & Beasts, my goal wasn't just to count steps. I wanted walking to feel rewarding. Golden hour walking fits that perfectly: it's movement, mindfulness, and a small daily achievement rolled into one. Health doesn't have to be about numbers. Sometimes it's about being outside at the right moment.
Try a golden hour walk this week. It's free, it's beautiful, and it genuinely helps. If you want to add a creature-collecting game to the mix, Steps & Beasts is free on iOS.
